What 13,699 Costco receipts reveal about price drops
We looked at every receipt CostRefund members scanned from March 2025 to September 21, 2026: 194,694 line items bought by 1,547 shoppers at 971 Costco warehouses. Here is when prices dropped after people had already paid, what dropped, and by how much.

About 1 in 10 Costco receipts has an item that drops in price after purchase
1,468 of 13,699 receipts (10.7%) had at least one item flagged for a lower price after the shopper bought it. Across all receipts that came to 2,290 alerts on 1,189 different products. Costco will refund the difference within its price-adjustment window, but only if the member notices and asks.
Most drops come within two weeks, and week one is the busiest
The median gap between purchase and a price-drop alert was 10 days, and a quarter arrived within 2 days. The first week alone accounted for 39% of alerts. The price you paid can change within days of buying, not just at the end of a sale cycle.
Most drops are small, and they add up
Where the exact saving could be confirmed (349 drops), the median was $4. One in ten was $20 or more, and the largest was $132.36. Few shoppers will make a trip to the membership desk for four dollars, but across a year of receipts the small drops add up.
The most-dropped items are groceries, not TVs
Price-adjustment advice usually focuses on electronics and appliances. In the receipts, the items flagged most often were fresh meat and produce. Labels are shown as Costco prints them.

Methodology and limits
- Source: 13,699 Costco receipts with line items, scanned into the CostRefund app by 1,547 members, mostly in the US and Canada, March 2025 to September 21, 2026. Figures are a snapshot taken on September 21, 2026.
- An alert means CostRefund found a lower current price for an item already bought. Only 349 of 2,290 alerts had an exact saving we could confirm; the dollar figures use only those. The rest are flagged as possible drops.
- The app watches each receipt for 30 days, so this measures drops inside that window. It says nothing about drops after it, and the fall-off after week 4 in the chart is the window, not Costco’s pricing.
- Items bought while already on a published promotion are excluded, since that discount was already paid.
- We do not report drop rates by product category. Category data is incomplete for most line items, and a rate built on it would be misleading.
- No personal information was used. Every figure is an aggregate.
